Stephen T. Frey

Partner

Stephen T. Frey’s practice focuses primarily on courtroom advocacy, especially criminal defense and representing clients in adversarial proceedings. He brings nearly thirteen years of experience as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Oakland County, including nine years in the Special Victims Unit. Stephen has prosecuted some of the most serious and emotionally sensitive criminal cases in Michigan, advocating for children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, sexual assault survivors, and survivors of intimate partner violence. His work earned him a reputation for exceptional communication, compassionate professionalism, and skilled advocacy.

When founding Frey Law, Stephen left the Prosecutor’s Office in good standing and with the respect of the Prosecutor and of his former colleagues. His familiarity with judges, prosecutors, and the decision-making process within the criminal justice system allows him to engage in productive negotiations and develop informed, strategic approaches to each client’s criminal case.

Likewise, Stephen’s years of Special Victims advocacy and his experience with Wayne Law’s Disability Law Clinic helped him develop tools to compassionately serve clients in civil litigation as well, whatever their needs. In addition to his ability to command a courtroom, Stephen is a skilled and persuasive legal writer and served as the appellate brief writer for his national moot court competition team during law school.

Clients facing criminal charges or complex legal action often need more than an advocate; they need a counselor who understands the gravity of their situation. Stephen provides that dual role. If a case proceeds to trial, clients are represented by an attorney with substantial courtroom experience. If it does not, it is because Stephen helped secure a better outcome through informed strategy and disciplined advocacy.

Stephen’s advocacy has received public and private recognition, including the Domestic Violence Prevention Award from the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence, related to his wholistic and comprehensive work with a survivor of intimate partner violence and the Public Service Excellence Award from The Arc of Oakland County, related to his work prosecuting a sexual assault against a survivor with an intellectual disability.

Stephen serves on the board of his family's church.

Brendan H. Frey

Partner

Brendan H. Frey’s practice focuses on business litigation, consumer financial services, and commercial transactions. He brings nearly two decades of legal experience spanning complex commercial litigation, corporate counsel work, and transactional matters — with a track record of significant results in both the courtroom and at the negotiating table.

Prior to founding Frey Law, Brendan served as Senior Legal Counsel - Vice President, Corporate Litigation at a publicly traded auto finance company. During his eleven-year tenure, he led the team responsible for litigation and complaint management and served as a trusted advisor to executive leadership across legal, operational, financial, and human resources functions. His corporate litigation work included high-stakes regulatory disputes, multi-state attorney general investigations, securities and derivative matters, and putative class actions. He was recognized by DBusiness Magazine as one of Michigan's Top Corporate Counsel in the banking and finance sector.

Before his corporate career, Brendan was a litigator at one of Michigan's premier litigation boutiques, where he handled complex commercial, antitrust, intellectual property, and other civil litigation matters. His representative work included counsel for automobile dealerships in the multidistrict antitrust litigation In re: Automotive Parts Antitrust Litigation (E.D. Mich.), involving price-fixing and bid-rigging claims spanning multiple automotive parts. He helped secure a summary judgment victory in Berge v. United States of America (D. D.C.) declaring Department of Defense healthcare policies for military families of children with autism arbitrary and capricious, resulting in expanded benefits for affected families nationwide, and obtained a complete dismissal — affirmed by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals — in Allstate Insurance Co. v. Global Medical Billing, et al., 520 Fed.Appx. 409 (6th Cir. 2013).

Brendan has also advised clients on a wide range of transactional matters, including real estate transactions, corporate governance and entity formation, commercial contract drafting and negotiation, and employment issues.
